Master Class: Sustainable Mobility in Japan

The Sustainable Mobility in Japan Masterclass is designed for postgraduate students and early career researchers with an interest in mobility, transportation and sustainability.
Its purpose is to provide a forum where shared research interests can be openly discussed so as to advance research in fields of sustainable mobility and tourism in Japan. The Masterclass gives participants the opportunity for sustained engagement with Professor Jonas Larsen, whose recent work entitled “The unstable lives of bicycles: the ‘unbecoming’ of design objects” raises important questions about what is normally conceived to be a sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of mobility: cycling. With over 80 million bicycles (jitensha tokei yoran, 2009), cycling plays an important role in everyday mobility in Japan.
Bringing together Professor Larsen’s expertise with the context of Japan, the aim of this Masterclass is to provide a workshop environment where participants will share research interests, life experiences and ideas concerning the implications of these “unbecoming objects” with respect to sustainable mobility in the Japanese context.
There will be 3 required readings for this session.

Speaker
Professor Jonas Larsen
Jonas Larsen is professor in Mobilities and Urban Studies at Roskilde University, Denmark, in the department of People and Technology. He has published extensively within the fields of mobilities, tourism and photography. He has co-authored the books Performing Tourist Places; Mobilities, Networks, Geographies; Tourism, Performance and the Everyday: Consuming the orient; and Digital Snaps: the new face of Digital Photography. His more recent research is concerned with geographies, designs and mobilities of cycling and running.
